Microsoft Intune Components

Microsoft Intune provides a cloud-based service that can help secure and manage your organization's devices. Because it is a cloud-based service, it can be administered using any web browser that supports Silverlight. Intune is used to manage the following devices:

  • mobile devices (including smartphones and tablets running Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and Windows RT operating systems); computers running Windows 8.1 can be managed as mobile devices or as computers using the Intune client software;
  • computers running professional editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1.

Intune Features

General features

  • Manage mobile devices and computers without servers or an intranet. You can manage mobile devices and computers even if the devices are not connected to a domain or network. This makes Intune an ideal solution for companies with mobile or geographically distributed resources.
  • Require encryption of mobile devices and computers. You can set up encryption requirements on mobile devices that support this feature. You can also set up BitLocker Drive Encryption requirements on computers that support this mode. If a mobile device or computer with encryption enabled is lost or stolen, the data on the device's storage media is unreadable, helping protect against data theft.
  • Create inventory and other reports on hardware and software. You can collect data on the hardware and software used by your organization, making it easier to plan hardware refresh cycles or identify unwanted software installed on managed devices.
  • Monitor computers and mobile devices. You can create alerts to notify you when a problem occurs with a mobile device or computer, as well as email notifications triggered by alerts that notify the appropriate people when a problem occurs.
  • Self-service model for IT professionals. Users can use the corporate portal to register devices, install software with site licenses, or find contact information for IT administrators.
  • Multi-factor authentication support: Intune now supports multi-factor authentication.
  • Multilingual availability: Intune is now available in the following languages:
    • Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
    • Czech
    • Danish
    • Dutch

Mobile Device Management (MDM) Capabilities

  • Manage system and cloud storage settings for mobile devices. These settings vary by mobile device platform. However, key settings include the ability to block notifications from being viewed on the lock screen on iOS devices (to protect meeting privacy) and allow diagnostic data collection on Windows Phone 8.1 and iOS devices.
  • Manage email access for mobile devices using Exchange ActiveSync. You can manage email access settings, including whether to allow or block attachment downloads and the number of email folders that are synced with your mobile device.
  • App settings: You can manage browser settings, as well as app settings such as allowing the use of app stores on mobile devices.
  • Device, mobile, and voice capabilities: You can allow or block camera use, manage roaming settings, and turn on or off the iOS voice assistant and voice dialing features.
  • Password reset, lock, or wipe: You can reset passwords if users have lost access to a device, lock lost or stolen devices, and even wipe data on lost or stolen devices.
  • Certificate, Email, Wi-Fi, and VPN profiles: Certificate, Email, VPN, and Wi-Fi profiles can be deployed to mobile devices.
  • Enroll corporate iOS devices You can set up devices for enrollment and then distribute them to specific users, or enroll devices so that multiple users can share them.
  • Mobile app management: Managed mobile apps can be configured to restrict certain app operations, such as copy and paste, to help protect your organization's data. You can also use a managed browser to control which sites users are allowed to visit.
  • Conditional Access: Use Intune Conditional Access policies to control access to on-premises Microsoft Exchange email from mobile devices, even if the device isn't managed by Intune.
